Honestly, my go to cans are the Sony MDR7506. They were always my final mix check cans when I worked in a recording studio.

Spend $50 on some decent ones and keep the remaining $350 for something else.

I'm all for high quality audio, but I can't fathom spending that much on headphones.

To each his own, though.

Just headphones, or headphones and a headphone amp? I dunno how good they are, but there are a few /g/uides on headphones out there that seem comprehensive.

$400 seems like a lot of money for headphones, but these B&O units look pretty nice.

I actually have some MDR7506s! However there was just something about them I didn't like. I can't really even tell you what it is.

I can vouch for the 7506s. Also, Sennheiser HD280s are quite good as well. I have both and swap them out interchangeably.

Comparing the two, the Sennheisers are a little less peaky at the high high end (4000k +).

Both are dirt cheap as far as good headphones that aren't marked up for the sake of marketing.

Please don't tell yourself you need to spend $400 on cans. Either of these will do the trick and leave you plenty of cash left over.

My wife has some Beats Studios. Christ, they are just fatiguing as fuck to wear during a long day. Ergonomically and sonically.

If you already have the Sonys, then give the HD280s a try.

Of course, that all depends on what it is you don't like about the Sonys.

probably the flat response, it can get a bit tiring. The sennheiser 280s were another favourite in the studio

I had a pair of Sennheiser HD 650's over a year ago that were great. They got stolen from work though, I forgot to lock them away in my desk and they went missing over a weekend.

I wasn't willing to keep such nice headphones at work anymore so I replaced them with a pair of AKG K240 studios which are lighter and more comfortable, more neutral but without the bass definition the Senny's had.

I got the Sennheisers for $340 down from $400 from a local music store, the guy gave me a discount because of my large beard. I paired them with a behringer headphone amp as my work laptop obviously didn't have the guts to do them justice. God they were great.

I have a set of Grados that I'm very fond of. I only spent $80 on their bottom end (still good) SR60i, but they go far up from there and I can only imagine they get better. Try a few and see what you like.

I have a great set of cans...AGK 701. I wanted these bad for a long time, and they did not disappoint. Not one little bit.

I know there are plenty of people who may disagree, but Skullcandy has a great sound to them. The downside is that unless you have a tiny head, they're not really that comfortable, and they're pretty fragile (headbands breaking is pretty normal). The earbuds are okay, but I've never found them comfortable for extended listening. The AKGs are very nice, though my only complaint is that the headband isn't the greatest design. Cans are massive though. I had a guy who does sound design and post production for Showtime and HBO say they were the biggest ones he's seen.

I didn't get them for size, I got them for the quality and comfort, and I'd say they were as close as I'd ever get. I'd give the comfort an 80/100, but the rest is spot on.

I've got Bose Quiet Comfort headphones that I was given, they're beat to shit. But by my standards, they're great. No fixed cord to the actual headphone, which is a plus because I normally rip the shit out of those.

Wait, shit, yo, get 26 pairs of Skullcandy ink'ds.

Actually, just hop on Amazon and buy a Blackberry Q10. Just ship it to me, I'll handle the pieces you don't want (box, manuals, the phone) and ship you the included headphones. I'll even throw you the charger 'cuz I'm nice like that.

I can see that, especially since the cables are easily removable and the buds are really tiny!

I fell in love with the bass heavy Monster Turbines when they came out. To avoid buying a counterfeit pair on ebay when the came out, I spent 40 bucks on a pair of broken ones. The right was dead. BUT recently monster put out a 50 dollar deal on eBay. FYI, make sure to buy a sampler pack of eartips, because they give you a colon's worth of large eartips. I think I will use them up when I reach 30

I had a pair and loved them! A bit too heavy on the base but they were awesome! However after 3 or so years of ownership something messed up with them and there was some glittering in the headphone on the high end.

Try a pair of Grado reference series RS1 or RS2. Really pleasant sound that changes the listening experience, even when you're using an iphone/smartphone to play your music. They are an open stage, on ear design, which makes the sound more expansive. Just keep in mind that the person sitting next to you will hear what you do. This is a nice price point to be at, and I find that it's just wasting money to go higher unless you're prepared to start upgrading every component in your sound system, which isn't practical (or even possible) for day-to-day use. They look great with their mahogany ear pieces too.

For in ear, I found success with Shure E535. The overall listening experience is one notch below the Grado's, but clearly a HUGE step up from any of the popular branded buds they sell at Best Buy. They naturally noise cancel, like all good in ear buds, and I never felt the need to go back to Bose for air travel. Unfortunately, I used them at the gym every day, which was a real problem. They are not designed to handle sweat, and you will wreck them. I now have a pair of Monster sport headphones (can't remember model, but in the $120 range). The difference is shocking, and relative to the Shure's they should only be allowed to charge $20.

Good luck.
